In just a few weeks, at Tamiami Airport the 24th Annual Sunrise Community Hot Air Balloon Race will take place.
The Sunrise Community is an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities. Their mission statement is as follows:
To provide people with disabilities the assistance and support
necessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community.
On this very special weekend, you can arrive early to see more than 35 hot air balloons being launched. Parking at the airport begins at 5:30 and the launching is scheduled for 6:30AM. Have you ever stood by as a 7-story hot air balloon goes airborne? Here's your chance to see not one, but many. The crowd whoops it up and cheers as they take off. There will be events scheduled throughout the weekend. To get full details about the race, please visit their official website.
Living in the Redlands, I often see hot air balloons floating overhead. It's always a magical sight, and that's just from the ground. But 35 balloons (or more!) will be quite a sight. Here's hoping our lovely South Florida weather cooperates that weekend so we can all enjoy it.
Teenagers and/or others who may need community service hours can volunteer at this event. See the website for details.
When: Saturday and Sunday, April 14th & 15th, 2007

Hi, Maggie! Glad to see you again!! :o)
This is going to be GORGEOUS!!! I hope you get loads of pictures to share with us!
(And hey, go peek at what Jeff Turner from RES posted in a comment here. This would be an EXCELLENT use!!) I know, I know, you don't have RES, but wouldn't it be COOL???
I hope you get great weather for the event and I hope they raise loads of money for their worthy cause!
Ironically, it's asking me to type "Mango". I see no Mango here!
Sarah - thanks for noticing that there's no mango here =) All those great RES features are making me rethink my commitment. I need to follow up with my provider.
Ines - now I'm intimidated thinking I have to produce something as good as Kristal's. yikes!! Maybe I'll check hers out to get some tips. Thanks!
HI Maggie.. is it sponsored by RE-max by any chance!? hee hee.. i'm kidding, i kid! have fun and get some shots for us!
Nick - hmmm...good question! I know Pilon is the biggest sponsor plus quite a few others but I saw no big balloon mega broker on the list. Maybe when I make it huge I can sponsor them myself. =)
Where have you been??!! Good to see you again. We SF peeps have to have that lunch of ours (including David P.)
Maggie, have you ever been up in one? I always wanted to but never have. of course I always thought jumping out of an airplane would be cool also but never have! We see balloons hear once in awhile in groups. Pretty cool!
Hi Maggie! I'm just saying hello....
I've always wanted to take a balloon ride. They say it's totally quiet. I can't get my wife to go with me though :)
Maggie: I suspect there will be more hot air there than at a political convention—or maybe not!
Jay
Mark - thanks for just saying hello. I always like that. Your wife sounds like my kind of girl. lol I'm a bit of a chicken, but secretly I do wish I had the guts to go skydiving. Chris really did it! I was so impressed by her. Enjoy your Sunday and stop by and say hello anytime!
Jay - why am I not surprised that you would make such a comparison? You may be right about that =) You always manage to get a chuckle from me.
Maggie: A little irreverence once in a while is our stock & trade. I’ve never taken a hot air balloon ride—but have done a lot of light plane flying, and once or twice in a sailplane. FUN! (Elderberry--twice in a row)
JayHi, Maggie. I used to watch the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque every year when I lived in NM. It is really gorgeous to see all those balloons in the air at once. I've only been in a hot air balloon once in Napa Valley, and we had to hover in a vineyard and "hop" out of the basket due to wind changes because the balloon couldn't land - I think I'll stick to appreciating them from the ground from now on!
Can't wait to see the pictures.
