In the past few years there’s been so much talk of people leaving south Florida and heading north. It seemed that was all I heard a few years back. But homes have become affordable once again in Miami and surrounding areas.
I read an interesting story of a family who headed to North Dakota lured by the promise of small town life, sweetened by the offer of free land and money to get their home purchase on its way.
It’s been four years since the Tristanis moved and they’re apparently trying to come back to south Florida. The beautiful weather here is just one of the many reasons.
You can read their story here. It’s a shame that the efforts of the development committee were not taken to heart by the surrounding community. Clearly, for things like this to work, everyone must be on board.
The Redland, just southwest of Miami, is a lovely place to call home. I love the fact that things are quiet here. And I’m never more than 10 minutes away from most things I need. It’s really the best of both worlds for me. I haven’t cleaned snow since 2001 when I left New York. I can’t say that the snow’s been missed. =)

Maggie,
People coming back to Florida is good news. Maybe it is a sign of changing tide? With properties that affordable, it cann be a good move
Maggie - I bet there will be more, too. We see the same thing - people coming here for the weather, but leaving because of prices. The good news is that prices are down and back to about 2002 in some areas, so many more folks CAN achieve their California dream.
Redland sounds like a wonderful place to be - buyers and sellers in the area are fortuante to have you as their expert resource.

Hi Maggie,
Thanks for the info. I clicked over and read your linked post. Very interesting that the town as a whole was interested in attracting newcomers, yet the family in question never felt really welcome.
Jonn, based on what I experience day to day, I do think that outward flow has been stemmed. Now if we could get the state of Florida to fix the way properties are taxed and exempted, maybe we could get a heck of a lot more back!
Jeff, yes, I can see that your market would have that appeal as well. I commented on a post just this week that if I were to ever leave FL, CA would be my natural 1st consideration. (of course, because of the weather).
Lynda, thanks for clicking over. It was a quick read. But the town wasn't entirely on board. Those that were part of that committee agreed with getting that program running. Apparently, everyone in town didn't get the memo that they should welcome the new neighbors.
Maggie - I love FL - but not sure I could do a city again - but if I ever did - you would be my agent
Maggie,
Sign me up. I am ready to pack up and leave NJ tomorrow :)
Good to hear clients are heading your way.
Have a great day
Leander
hi Maggie,
It sounds like Florida is the place to move to...no snow, beautiful scenery and affordable properties.
Jo
I cannot imagine living anywhere other than Florida!
